An octopus has roughly 500 million neurons, comparable to a dog. But unlike any vertebrate, about two-thirds of those neurons are not in the brain at all. They are distributed across its eight arms. Each arm can taste, touch, and make decisions locally. A severed arm continues responding to stimuli for up to an hour.
