An octopus has roughly 500 million neurons, comparable to a dog, but two-thirds of them reside in its arms rather than its brain. Each arm can taste, feel, and problem-solve somewhat independently, even after being severed. An octopus is less a centralized mind than a loose federation of eight semi-autonomous intelligences.
