Basque, spoken in northern Spain and southern France, is the only language in western Europe with no known relatives anywhere in the world. Every other European language descends from a common ancestor or has traceable kin. Basque stands completely alone. Linguists call it a language isolate, and its origins remain genuinely unknown.
