Before the 1880s, every town in the United States kept its own solar time. By the 1870s, American railroads alone operated on roughly 53 separate time standards. A Canadian engineer named Sandford Fleming proposed a global system of 24 standardized time zones in 1879. Governments largely ignored him; the US did not adopt standard time zones by law until 1918.
