Between 1944 and 1945, Japan launched roughly 9,300 incendiary balloons made of paper and silk, designed to ride the jet stream across the Pacific. Around 300 reached North America. In May 1945, one killed six people on a picnic in rural Oregon, making them the only combat casualties on US mainland soil during the entire war.
