During World War II, the US military spent two years developing bat bombs: thousands of free-tailed bats, each carrying a tiny timed incendiary device, to be dropped over Japanese cities. The plan collapsed after escaped test bats accidentally burned down a US airfield hangar and a general's car. The project was officially called Operation X-Ray.
