Every gram of gold on Earth, every wedding ring, every fleck in every rock, was forged in the collision of two neutron stars long before our solar system existed. In 2017, gravitational wave detectors captured the shockwave from exactly such a collision 130 million light-years away. Astronomers watching the afterglow confirmed it was producing gold at hundreds of Earth-masses per second.
