In 1770, Wolfgang von Kempelen unveiled a chess-playing automaton to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. Known as the Turk, it defeated Napoleon and Benjamin Franklin and baffled audiences for 84 years. Its secret: a skilled chess player concealed inside the cabinet, operating the arm through an ingenious system of levers and magnets.
