In 1788, the Austrian Imperial Army accidentally fought itself at the Battle of Karansebes. Soldiers quarreling over schnapps fired on their own troops in the dark; panicked men fled shouting 'The Turks are coming!' The chaos caused an estimated 10,000 Austrian casualties before a single Ottoman soldier arrived.
