In 1859, a bankrupt San Francisco merchant named Joshua Norton declared himself Emperor of the United States. To everyone's surprise, the city went along with it. Restaurants accepted the currency he printed himself. Police officers saluted him on the street. When he died in 1880, an estimated 10,000 people attended his funeral.
