In 18th-century Britain, wealthy landowners advertised for ornamental hermits to live in purpose-built garden hermitages on their estates. Contracts required seven years of solitude, with prohibitions on cutting hair, trimming nails, or speaking to anyone. They were paid a salary to simply exist, in silence, as a living philosophical decoration.
