In 1932, Australia sent soldiers with Lewis guns to cull 20,000 emus devastating farmland in Western Australia. The emus scattered into small groups every time soldiers opened fire, making targeting nearly impossible, and the operation was quietly abandoned after a few weeks. Newspapers called it the Great Emu War.
