In 1932, the Australian military deployed soldiers with Lewis guns to cull emus damaging wheat crops in Western Australia. After weeks of engagements, the emus largely won: they dispersed when fired upon, regrouped, and proved impossible to pin down. The commanding officer withdrew. A parliamentary proposal to resume the campaign was quietly rejected.
