In 1964, a Zambian schoolteacher named Edward Mukuka Nkoloso announced a national space program aimed at reaching the moon before the US and the Soviet Union. His afronauts trained by rolling down hills in oil drums to simulate weightlessness. He applied to UNESCO for funding. He was entirely serious.
