In 1974, a Japanese soldier named Hiroo Onoda was found still fighting in the jungles of Lubang Island in the Philippines. He had been there for nearly 30 years, loyal to a mission that ended in 1945. He refused to believe Japan had surrendered. Only when his former commanding officer flew from Japan to personally issue the order did Onoda finally stand down.
