In 1978, Soviet physicist Anatoli Bugorski accidentally put his head into the beam path of an active particle accelerator. The proton beam passed through his skull at near light speed. He described a flash brighter than a thousand suns but felt no pain. He survived, completed his PhD, and outlived the Soviet Union.
