In 1991, researchers at the University of Cambridge set up a camera pointed at a shared coffee pot and streamed the image to their internal network. The sole goal: to check whether coffee was ready without walking downstairs. When the feed went live on the public internet in 1993, it became the world's first webcam. It was watched by millions before being switched off in 2001.
