In 897 AD, Pope Stephen VI had the corpse of his predecessor Pope Formosus exhumed nine months after burial, dressed in full papal vestments, propped on a throne, and put on trial. A deacon spoke in the dead pope's defense. The corpse was found guilty, mutilated, and thrown into the Tiber.
