In January 1962, a laughing fit broke out among students at a boarding school in Tanganyika (now Tanzania). Within months it had spread to hundreds of people across several villages, forcing school closures that lasted months. Victims reported uncontrollable laughter and crying lasting up to 16 days. No pathogen was ever identified. The leading explanation remains mass psychogenic illness, triggered by acute social stress.
