In January 1962, an outbreak of uncontrollable laughing and crying began among schoolgirls at a mission school in Kashasha, Tanganyika (now Tanzania). It spread to neighboring villages and lasted over a year, forcing multiple schools to close and affecting hundreds of people. No physical cause was ever established.
