In July 1962, the United States detonated a 1.4-megaton nuclear warhead 250 miles above the Pacific Ocean in a test called Starfish Prime. The blast created artificial auroras visible from Hawaii and New Zealand, knocked out streetlights in Honolulu, and produced a radiation belt that persisted for years and disabled at least six satellites.
