In June 1783, a volcanic fissure in Iceland called Laki began an eruption lasting eight months, releasing enough sulfur dioxide to create a toxic haze across Europe. Crop failures and brutal winters followed. Many historians argue the resulting food shortages in France were a direct accelerant of the Revolution that began six years later.
