In March 1958, a US Air Force B-47 accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb on Mars Bluff, South Carolina. The conventional explosives detonated, creating a crater in a family's vegetable garden. The Air Force eventually paid the Gregg family $54,000 in compensation. The nuclear core was not aboard the aircraft.
