In September 1859, a solar storm struck Earth with such force that telegraph operators received electric shocks through their equipment. Some lines transmitted messages without battery power, running purely on geomagnetic currents. Auroras blazed as far south as Cuba and Hawaii. A storm of equal size today would collapse global power grids within hours.
