In the 1870s, rival paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh declared open war over fossil rights in the American West. They bribed each other's workers, blew up dig sites rather than yield them, and savaged each other in academic journals. Cope even willed his skull to science, hoping to prove his brain was larger than Marsh's.
