In the summer of 1858, London's River Thames became so overwhelmingly foul with raw sewage and industrial waste that Parliament could not sit. Members debated behind chloride-soaked curtains. The crisis, called the Great Stink, triggered the construction of a vast underground sewer network that still serves the city today.
