In the summer of 1858, the River Thames became so saturated with raw sewage that the stench drove members of Parliament from the building. The event, known as the Great Stink, was so politically overwhelming that it finally forced the construction of London's modern sewer system, designed by engineer Joseph Bazalgette and largely still in use today.
