On June 4, 1923, jockey Frank Hayes won a steeplechase at Belmont Park while dead. He had suffered a heart attack mid-race but remained in the saddle as his horse, Sweet Kiss, crossed the finish line first. It remains the only recorded instance of a posthumous victory in horse racing history.
