On October 17, 1814, a fermentation vat at the Meux and Company brewery in London ruptured, releasing roughly 100,000 gallons of beer into the streets of St. Giles. The flood demolished two houses and killed at least eight people. The brewery was later acquitted on grounds of Act of God.
