On October 17, 1814, a fermentation vat at the Meux and Company brewery in London burst, sending over 100,000 gallons of beer through the St. Giles slum. Walls collapsed and eight people died. The coroner ruled it an act of God; the brewery paid no damages and was later granted a tax refund for the lost beer.
