Recovered from a shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901, a 2,100-year-old bronze device tracked the positions of the sun and moon, predicted eclipses, and calculated the timing of athletic competitions. Nothing of comparable mechanical sophistication appears in the historical record for at least 1,400 years afterward.
