The earliest written languages, including Ancient Greek, had no word for the colour blue. Homer called the sea 'wine-dark' and described the sky by other means entirely. Before a culture names a colour, its members genuinely struggle to distinguish it from neighbouring hues. Language, it turns out, shapes what we are able to see.
