The golden glow of a candle flame does not come from burning gas but from superheated soot particles. As carbon clusters fail to fully combust, they heat to around 1,200 degrees Celsius and radiate that warm light. A candle burning in pure oxygen, with virtually no soot, produces a nearly invisible blue flame.
