The last woolly mammoths did not die in the Ice Age. A small population survived on Wrangel Island, in the Arctic Ocean, until around 1650 BCE, meaning they were alive while Egyptians were raising temples along the Nile. The mainland herds vanished millennia earlier; the island bought the species another four thousand years.
