The Paris Catacombs hold the remains of roughly six million people, but they were not built as a burial site. In the late 18th century, Parisian cemeteries had become so catastrophically overcrowded that bodies were decomposing into neighboring basements. Beginning in 1786, workers transferred bones into abandoned limestone quarries beneath the city, with priests blessing the nocturnal processions by torchlight.
