The Sistine Chapel choir employed castrati, men castrated in boyhood to preserve their soprano voices, until 1903. Alessandro Moreschi, the last surviving castrato, made recordings in Rome in 1902 and 1904. They remain the only acoustic record of a voice type that shaped sacred music for three centuries.
