The smell of rain, called petrichor, comes from a compound called geosmin released by soil bacteria. Humans can detect it at concentrations as low as 5 parts per trillion, making us more sensitive to it than sharks are to blood in water. Scientists believe this extreme sensitivity helped our ancestors locate water after drought.
