When ancient Egyptians were building the Great Pyramid, a small population of woolly mammoths was still alive on Wrangel Island in the Arctic. The last mammoths died around 1650 BCE, nearly a thousand years after the pyramid was completed. Extinction is rarely as ancient as it feels.
