When Beethoven premiered his Ninth Symphony in Vienna in 1824, he was profoundly deaf and could hear nothing. He stood on stage conducting from memory. When the music ended, the audience gave five standing ovations. Beethoven did not know. A soloist touched his arm and turned him to face the hall. Only then could he see the applause.
