When Brooklyn Bridge chief engineer Washington Roebling became paralyzed from decompression sickness in 1872, his wife Emily Warren Roebling spent years studying higher mathematics, cable mechanics, and construction management to take over as de facto project supervisor. She communicated directly with the workers every day for over a decade. When the bridge opened in 1883, she was the first person to cross it.
