For Jade
Falling had always been her favorite part. The sensation of nothing rushing past her. Her hair suspended in zero gravity. The usual sadness hit her as the fall ended. Why did it end? Could she not just fall forever? She made a mental note to ask her tutor about that. Although she knew the answer would be no, it would cause calamity. Hundreds of wishes all coming true as people saw her, she would run out of wishes. Her essence would be drained, she would die. Not quickly, not painlessly, but slowly, so slowly. Pain unlike any anyone had felt or could even comprehend feeling. It would not only take her life but her soul would be devoured by the humans hungry wishes. No, she thought. It's better this way. Falling once a century. Granting one wish. Then living on, waiting, dreaming for her next fall. Sophie smiled in her sleep. Then the dream ended and she rolled over. Continuing to sleep but not dreaming.
