Artillery blitzed the enemy all night
Over one million shells it was quite a fright
Us Tommys aimed to blow up their barbed wire
For as a prospect to us it was rather dire
As the sun poked over the horizon
We thought the wire would be gone
At 7 o clock the generals screamed
Sending us out to get creamed
The wire was there, still intact
And the Jerrys were well defended infact
In the first hour all the officers were slain
Many would never be remembered by name
For so brutally destroyed they were
You couldn't even tell if it was him or her
Still us brave English advanced
Taking it at a diliberate prance
In the end very few survived
I probrably wasn't someone alive
