I switched the girl into one arm and somehow had the strength to carry the boy as well. Through the smoke, I looked around for an exit. All I managed to see was a window with no glass. I stumbled over to it and looked down at what I would land on, if I were to jump. It was only burnt grass and ashes. I inhaled deeply and gripped tighter to the two children I was holding onto. I climbed onto the windowsill and struggled for balance. My foot suddenly slipped. I opened my mouth to scream but no sound escaped. I closed my eyes tightly shut. I felt the air brush against my cheeks. I felt my hair fly around my face. As soon as I felt pressure on my feet, I opened my eyes. I ran through the meadow getting as far away from the smoke and flames as possible. During the falling process I had surprisingly managed to stay the right way up. A cough interrupted my fantasies. I laid down the two young children and checked for pulses. The girls heart beat was a lot stronger than the boy. Katie's eyes started to move, but remained closed.
"Katie?" I said, sounding a bit worried. She made a noise. I was soon staring into her sweet, innocent blue eyes.
"Where's Daniel?" She asked immediately sitting bolt up right
"Is Daniel your brother?" I inquired. Katie nodded with tears building in her eyes. She looked over to her left to see her brothers body, covered in red scars. I could see her anger as she bit her bottom lip. A single drop of crimson coloured blood fell from her lips and landed on Daniel's burnt shirt.
"Hey!" a voice yelled from behind us "what do you think you're doing?"
I turned round to see a red faced man storming towards me. I guessed this was their father as Katie ran over and hugged him.
"Answer me!" he yelled again "what do you think your doing on my land, with my children?!"
I stood up and walked over to him.
"I'm not sure if you've noticed but your house is going up in flames!" I almost shouted at him. He looked behind me and saw that I was right. His face was grew more red and his mouth dropped open "and you also may not have known but your children were in there and now there not! Who do you think got them out?" I could feel my face becoming hotter and hotter with anger.
"You." he said seeming to be a bit calmer "I'm sorry to seem so angry at first, I'm sorry."
'yeah you should be' I thought to myself
"I'm Carmine." I said
"George."
"Daddy, Daniels not breathing." Katie's voice was worried and frightened. My eyes opened wider and I rushed to kneel down by him. I placed my two fingers on his neck. There was a slight pulse. George was on the opposite side in a flash. He pressed down hard and fast on Daniel's chest.
"Come on, boy!" he said
The pulse on my fingers began to fade. I moved my hand away and George knew what I meant. Daniel had gone. From behind George I heard gentle sniffles. Katie buried her head in his chest and cried. George rocked her back and fourth and I could see he had a tear in his eyes as well. A gentle breeze blew my hair and making me notice a dead dandelion that was planted next to me. I picked it up and blew it over Daniels body, closing my eyes. I opened them and saw the grey coloured seeds gently touch his skin, hiding the scars. I stood up and looked at George and Katie.
"I'm really sorry," I whispered "it's very nice to have met you though and Daniel isn't really gone, he's just not in human form."
