'I'm in' I replied. Lucy shot me a worried look. 'pack anything you need and meet me in the morning at the helipad, oh and don't forget your mask this time' she said with a hint of a smile. As soon as we got back to our room Lucy grabbed my arm. 'you can't go, Abby... It's too dangerous, what am I going to do if you and Adam don't come back.' 'Lucy,we will be coming back, both of us.' 'but...' 'no buts, answer this. Would Adam do it for me?' '...yes' she said quietly. 'I'm going' I said firmly. Lucy then grabbed my uniform and bag. 'well we better get you packed and ready, we don't want you forgetting anything this time' she said cheerfully but I could see the tears that filled her eyes. That night I dreamt what my life would have been like if I hadn't met Adam, it was a cold, empty existence and it made me even more determined to rescue him. Lucy and I were silent at breakfast, neither of us wanting to remind the other of the possibility of this being the last time together. Lucy was pushing her weetabix around in the bowl not eating any, while I ate a cooked breakfast, knowing it would be my last hot meals for a few weeks. 'better eat up Lucy Lou, your eating for two remember!' I said cheerfully trying to make her smile so I could engrave it in my memory. 'well, it has been scientifically proven that, that is in fact not the case and just and excuse for us to eat more!' she said in her silly posh accent. We both burst out laughing. As we walked back to our room, many people stopped me and wished me good luck and that Adam was a lucky boy to have someone like me coming to rescue him. As I changed into my uniform, I heard Lucy scrambling about in her bedside draw. 'here' she said, ' I want you to have this and to give this to Adam, when you find him' she said putting emphasis on the 'when'. In one hand she had a scan of the baby and in the other she had her grandmothers silver locket. It was a tiny heart, with her grandmothers initials engraved on the back and a beautiful engraving of a swallow on the front. 'Lucy I can't take this' I mumbled. 'of course you can' she said and fastened it around my neck. I opened it and found a tiny photo of Lucy and I laughing in one half and a photo of Adam and I together a few years ago. I looked up and we both had silent tears sliding down our cheeks. We got to the helipad just in time. 'didn't think you were coming' said our commander 'sorry, I nearly forgot my mask again' I said cheekily, she rolled her eyes. Just as I was getting on I turned and gave Lucy a fierce hug. 'I will be coming back lucy, you can count on me.' I shouted over the helicopter blades. Just as I was belting up I realized this was the first mission I would do without Lucy, and I felt scared.
