I closed my eyes and waited for the intense pain that I knew would follow. I heard two gun shots and all I could think about was how much I loved Adam, and how he would never know. I thought of what our life together might of been like. Finally I thought of him leaving me, to go back to safety, I wondered if he would be curious as to what happened to me, when I didn't come back, if he would feel bad for leaving me behind. I waited for the pain, but none came. I looked up and opened my eyes a crack. Adam was standing there, he looked like a fallen angel, the sun shining from behind him, gun pointed at the ground and a stormy look on his face. The two soldiers were lying on the ground in front of me, I think they were dead. He came back! I thought, I could barely keep the smile of my face.
'give me your hand' he said harshly
I did, confused at his tone, he took the girl from me, who had passed out in fright, and took my arm and helped me hobble back to the helicopter. I had landed on a piece of shrapnel and my leg was bleeding badly. I was barely conscious when the helicopter took off. But as I drifted in and out of consciousness, I thought I felt someone stroking my hair and whispering 'you never listen, you could of been killed...then what would I have done...'
