I gasped as the cool gel hit my stomach, Adam squeezed my hand excitedly, today we were going to see our baby for the first time. The nurse pressed the machine lightly against my stomach, Adam and I stared at the screen waiting for the first glimpse of our child. 'there.' the nurse announced, tapping her keyboard to save the image. My breath caught in my throat, and my eyes began to fill with happy tears. On the screen was our small child, curled up tightly. I looked at Adam through my blurred eyes and smiled, he lent down and kissed my head, not taking his eyes off the screen. 'Its too soon to determine the sex of the baby, but on your next scan we should be able to tell.' the nurse said smiling kindly. She wiped the gel off my stomach and went to collect the printed picture. 'I can't believe that, that baby is ours.' I said happily, still smiling at the screen. Adam mumbled a reply as he nuzzled into my hair.
Lucy pounced on us as soon as we walked through the door, 'show me...show me.' she squealed excitedly as I handed over the photo. She calmed down as soon as she saw it, sitting down on the bed, 'oh Abby...' she said quietly, looking up at me her eyes shining with tears. 'I'm so happy for you.' she said hugging me tightly. 'boy or girl, they are going to be so loved, and spoiled by their aunty.' she said grinning. I hugged her back tighter.
She left shortly after to see Tom, leaving me and Adam. 'I'm going to call mum and tell her.' I announced. I dialed the number and hit the speaker button so Adam could talk too. 'hi mum' I chirped as she picked up the phone. 'oh hi Abby, how are you and Adam.' she beamed down the phone. 'we are great, actually more than great mum, I'm pregnant.' I burst out. 'oh...oh Abby that's great news, hang on let me get your dad.' we heard mum calling and quickly filling dad in. 'hi Adam, Abby that's great news, your mothers getting me to book flights out to see you both.' dad said. 'that's great dad, we will see you soon, we've got to tell Adams parents now so I'll speak to you later.' we heard the receiver click, then Adam dialed his house number. 'hello' his mum said briskly. 'hi mum, it's Adam. Abby and I have got some news for you... Abby's pregnant.' he said excitedly. The other line went quiet and then we heard the soft click as she put the phone down.
