Adam sat staring at the phone, I sensed he needed to be alone, so i crept silently into the bathroom. I stood quietly waiting for the sound of him moving. I heard a low thud and ran out to see what happened, I saw one of our pillows slumped against the wall were Adam had threw it. He had a hurt look drawn across his face, I went and cradled his head in my arms, nuzzling into his hair. Then he looked up at me and I said innocently, 'maybe her phone cut off.' he raised an eyebrow at me, and then I saw the hurt on his face turn to anger. 'she needs to grow up, it would upset me when she was sneery at you, but to completely reject to acknowledge her own grandchild...' he broke off, and started stabbing at the keypad of the phone, it rang for ages before someone picked up. 'hello' Adams dad said cheerily. 'is mum there' Adam said abruptly. 'um yes...do you want me to get her.' he said hesitantly. 'yes dad, oh and by the way Abby's pregnant.' he said his voice lifting slightly towards the end. 'oh my, that's great Adam! When's the baby due?' his dad exclaimed. 'around June.' he said. We heard shuffling and hushed whispers on the end of the line and then Adams mum spoke, 'yes' she said exasperatedly. 'mum just answer me this one question.' Adam said patiently. 'what Adam? I'm very busy.' she said getting more irritated. 'are you not at all happy for me and Abby. Are you not a little bit excited that you're going to be a grandma?' he asked. There was a long pause before she slowly said, 'no Adam.' and with that she hung up, again. Adam visibly crumpled, I held him to me tightly, gently stroking his head. It broke my heart to see his mother wound him like this. I didn't even realize I was crying until Adam looked up and wiped a tear off my face. 'Abby don't cry.' he said lovingly, 'i don't care what she thinks anymore, we've given her the chance to be involved in our child's life and if she doesn't want to be involved then that's her loss.'
