'Abby!' cried my parents simultaneously. They rushed forward embracing me tightly, 'careful.' I said pushing them back lightly. I had just started to show, my stomach gently curved out, so that you could tell I was pregnant. Mum held me looking down at my stomach. She was smiling and I saw a stray tear slip down her cheek. 'I'm so proud of you Abby.' she whispered her eyes still fixed on my stomach. I gave her hand a squeeze and lead them out of the airport, to where Adam was waiting in the car. My mum planted two kisses on his cheeks, and my dad gave him a hug. We stayed at a hotel near the airport, as we couldn't all fit into Adams room. As soon as our bags hit the floor mum started bombarding me with questions about the baby. 'when are you due Abby? Mum asked. 'about the 17th of June.' I replied smiling and stroking my small bump. 'is it a boy or a girl?' she said excitedly. 'we find out in tomorrows scan.' I said excitedly. 'have you thought of any names?' she said aiming the question at Adam. He straightened up from where he had been helping unpack the suitcases, 'Abby and I both like Amelie for a girl and Jamie for a boy.' he said grinning. 'oh I love those names.' mum squealed excitedly, clapping her hands together like a small child. That night I couldn't get comfortable, I finally found the right spot as I lay on my back. Adam propped his head up on his elbow, 'are you excited for tomorrow?' he said. I smiled and nodded back, he reached over and started drawing swirls with his fingers over my tummy, like he was trying to communicate with our baby. He gently lulled me to sleep as he gently drew patterns across my bump.
I slowly blinked open my eyes and yawned, stretching out and feeling the empty space in the bed beside me. I sat up looking around for Adam as he walked in carrying a cup of steaming liquid. I suddenly felt a smile flash across my face as I remembered that we would find out If our child was a boy or a girl today. He lent over kissing my forehead and carefully passing me the cup of tea. 'today's the day.' he said barely managing to contain his excitement.
As the nurse walked in mum squeezed my hand gently, her eyes sparkling in anticipation. 'are you ready.' smiled the nurse, I nodded pulling up my shirt. I jumped as the gel slid onto my stomach, goosebumps rising on my skin. Slowly as she slid the gel around with the machine, the goosebumps began to fade. 'right, do you want to know the sex of your baby.' she beamed at us. 'yes, yes, yes.' we both said holding our breath.
