'what' I said shocked. I looked at his face waiting for a glimmer of recognition. 'who are you?' he repeated slowly. 'Adam...I'm Abby... You're wife' I said holding up my ring hand. 'this is your daughter.' I said pointing to Amelie who was sleeping. 'what!' he exclaimed sitting up quickly, 'I'm only eighteen.' 'no Adam your twenty five.' I said shaking my head sadly. I rushed out of the room before the flood of tears that I was holding in, spilled out. I grabbed the nearest doctor and dragged them inside, 'he can't remember anything.' I wailed. Adam was staring at Amelie and then at his ring finger, with a look of intense concentration on his face. 'Adam do you remember if you hit your head when the bomb went off?' the doctor asked slowly. 'what bomb?' he said sounding scared. The doctor sighed, 'what is the last thing you remember?' 'umm...I was...I was with my girlfriend...Cathy.' At the mention of Cathy something inside me snapped, I felt a cold tear trickle down my face, followed quickly by another, until my whole body was racking with sobs. 'please calm down.' the doctor said rubbing my back soothingly, 'we need to sent him for a CT scan and then we will know if the damage is permanent.' As I heard permanent, a new wave of despair crashed over me, drowning me in it's depth.
I waited with Amelie in the waiting room, staring at the clock as the seconds turned to minutes and the minutes turned to hours. Lucy came to take me home so that I could bath and change Amelie and so that I could shower. Amelie seemed to have picked up on the somber mood because, when I bathed her she wailed, when I dried and changed her she cried and even after feeding her she still was howling. Lucy took her from me so I could shower, but as I let the hot water drum into my skin, I could still hear her crying, each new wail pulled at my heart, urging me to get to her faster. I rushed out to her and as soon as I picked her up again her wailing began to subside, turning to gentle snuffles as she drifted off to sleep. I carefully tucked her into her cot and drifted downstairs where Lucy handed me a cup of tea. We both stood silently, resting against the kitchen worktops occasionally sipping at our drinks. We both stared at the phone waiting.
As soon as the shrill ring of the phone pierced the air I snatched it up. 'hello' I said tentatively. 'Abby, we need you to come in...we have Adams results.'
