"She's gone." Lydia sighed.
Lydia and Gavin were in the middle of nowhere. The area around them was empty, except for cornfields and barns. The wind whistled beside them.
"I know." Gavin muttered, looking away.
"You don't even care." Lydia cried.
Gavin stood up, his face growing red.
"You don't think I care?" Gavin shouted. "Damn it, Lydia, I do care! She was my friend longer than she was yours!" Gavin grew quiet. "I met her when I arrived here. She was my only friend."
Gavin's hands balled into fists. "And you think I don't care? I was trying to protect you! But, damn it, I do care."
Gavin sat down on the ground and started to sob, tears streaming down his face.
The wind picked up speed.
"I-I'm sorry." Lydia stated, "I didn't know she meant so much to you." "Whatever." Gavin said, sniffing and wiping his eyes.
Lydia stood up and looked around. What fears of hers could be hiding here?
She helped Gavin to his feet. The wind was whipping through their hair, making it hard to see.
Lydia watched in awe as a flower was plucked out of the ground, as if it was being pulled by an invisible hand. The flower flew through the air, until it was out of sight.
Lydia could hear buildings creaking. Plants around her were being pulled into the air, swirling around her.
"Gavin.." Lydia said shakily. "Tornado." Gavin nodded his head. He looked at Lydia. "Come on."
"Where are we going?" Lydia yelled above the wind.
"We gotta find cover!" Gavin screamed, grabbing Lydia's hand and pulling her to the barn behind them.
It took what seemed like hours to reach the barn. The pair finally reached the doors, and as quick as they could, they pulled open the doors and bolted inside.
The barn smelled of manure and rotten eggs. There was a tiny window in the wall. Lydia waltzed over to the window and looked at the outside. She gasped.
"What is it?" Gavin asked, walking over to her. Lydia couldn't explain it.
"Look.." she murmured.
People from all directions were running to the tornado, letting the wind pull them in.
"There's at least 100 people there." Lydia murmured.
Gavin's eyes lit up. He grabbed Lydia's hand and pulled her toward the barn doors. "Come on!" he shouted.
Lydia pulled away from Gavin. "Are you insane?" she shrieked. "They're all going to die."
"No, they're not!" Gavin said excitedly. "The exit. They're heading for the exit."
"You're crazy!" Lydia exclaimed. "No one in their right mind would run into a tornado."
"Lydia," Gavin said, grabbing her shoulders. "This could be the only way out. We've got to try."
